What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s normal not to know exactly what to expect. At Mellow Therapy in Culver City, we’re here to make the process as welcoming, transparent, and personalized as possible—helping you feel at ease both leading up to and during your first in-person session.

Preparing for your first therapy session at Mellow Therapy in Culver City
1

Schedule with Your Dedicated Therapist

After you have completed the initial consultation, our team will match you with a therapist who best fits your needs and invite you to schedule your first appointment with them.
2

Complete Intake Forms 24 Hours Prior

Before your appointment, you will receive online intake forms via our Simple Practice platform. These forms will cover essential aspects of your care, such as confidentiality, payment details, and office policies. The forms will need to be completed 24 hours prior to your session; if not, we may reschedule your appointment.
3

In-Person: Arriving to the Office

Our office is conveniently located at 13323 W Washington Blvd, Unit 102—right on the border of Culver City and Marina del Rey. You’ll receive detailed parking instructions in your onboarding email. If you arrive a little early, feel free to relax in our lobby. Your therapist will meet you at your scheduled time and guide you back to their private office, where your session will begin.
4

Virtual: Joining the Online Meeting

Before your appointment, you will receive a Google Calendar invite for your virtual session, including a Zoom link you will use to join your session at the scheduled time.
5

Your First Session

Sessions are designed to last 50 minutes. For your initial session, your therapist will ask questions regarding your background, history, and therapeutic goals to get to know you better, allowing you both to build a foundation of trust and rapport with one another. It is crucial you feel comfortable in your sessions, so we encourage you to share at a pace that feels right for you.
6

After Your First Session

Once your first session is finished, your therapist will have you schedule your next appointment and determine the frequency at which you attend (weekly is typically recommended for new patients but is based on individual needs). From there, your sessions will be based on your needs and focus on working toward your therapeutic goals.
